One fun and easy way to expose your child to bilingualism is by reading aloud to them from children’s books written in another language. Fortunately it is easy and affordable to find a wide range of children’s books written in Spanish! From “La Oruga Muy Hambrienta” (“The Very Hungry Catterpillar”) to “Si Le Das una Galletita a un Ratón” (“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”), your favorite children’s classics as well as new family favorites finds are easily available!
- Visit your local library. “La Biblioteca” is a great place to find a selection of Spanish language children’s books. Read aloud to your child while browsing the selection and take a few home to test out. Simple and gratis! Find the Free Library location near you: http://www.freelibrary.org/index.htm.
- Search for your favorite children’s authors on Amazon – with a twist. Simply search for the author’s name plus “in Spanish.” If you just search title, it will often not recognize that you’re looking for the Spanish version and just give you the English.
- Save money and a tree by buying used! Visit Ebay and search for “Spanish Children’s Book Lot.” You’ll find dozens of listings for gently used books for a steal!
