Mi Casita is about more than just being bilingual – we aim to develop a generation of multicultural students who are curious, passionate, confident lifelong learners. Part of encouraging that creativity and exploration is the regular incorporation of ART.
We all know that art promotes creativity, but this point should not be taken for granted. It is important to develop your child’s relationship to art as soon as possible to get them comfortable with the idea of taking chances both artistically and throughout their other spheres of development.
Art is also highly instrumental in building fine motor skills. Pasting items to paper, drawing eyes on a monster, cutting out a circle, and squeezing glue all help children to improve fine motor skills and give them a sense of purpose in doing so.
While scribble scrabble may seem unimportant, it actually plays a significant role in early writing development. Over time, children gain control over the crayon or marker, leading to shapes, which lead to letter formation.
Art also engages all of the senses and enhances neural connections. Children get to explore the texture of clay and play-doh, the stickiness of glue, and the infinite color palate available through mixing primary colors!
From deciding which color to use to determining the placement of items in a drawing, art opens up problem-solving abilities. Children given a blank canvas are forced to make decisions. This helps them become comfortable with confidently making choices on their own!
Early childhood art activities even garner an appreciation for what they see in the outside art world. Children can begin to make connections between other artists and themselves. This can help build their confidence and further inspire their imaginations.
Art can also be a great teaching tool for social skills and teamwork. Group projects allow them to communicate with their peers, compare and contrast work, and collaborate to create something truly unique and special.
We look forward to giving every child the chance to regularly express their creativity and develop their imaginations through art at Mi Casita Preschool!
